Nicki lives in the Hudson Valley of New York and renovated her kitchen a few years ago. There's a great renovation video to watch. *Post contains affiliate links.
Your kitchen is stunning Nicki! The renovation is incredible. As a food blogger, I related to everything you said about blogging and, while I haven't given up my blogs, being here on Substack is breathing new life into me. Also, thanks to this article, I discovered your podcast. I've only listened to two episodes so far, but it's fantastic.
Oh this really resonates - the kitchen is truly where the home is, and when it works for you (not just the kitchen but how it flows with surrounding spaces), so much just falls into place naturally. We've lived with less than ideal spaces (still do), and sure, you learn to "make do", but it can be so limiting.
And yes, @Lynn Hill, we totally agree everyone should check out the reno vid ☺️ (thanks for including it, Nicki) - that “appliance garage” is a great way to have easy access while keeping the counter neat. My friend has a similar setup that runs almost the whole length of her main cabinet, and she loves being able to just roll out what she needs.
I love your words "when it works for you... so much falls into place naturally." That is so wise and true! I do believe that when we make our kitchens work for us (this can in the smallest of ways, such as in making ingredients and appliances more accessible, not necessarily through renovations) we find more ease and flow as cooks (and humans!).
Oooh, an appliance garage that runs the whole length of a cabinet?! Brilliant!
Yeah I'm sooo envious every time I step into her kitchen. We used to have a very narrow kitchen that was a bit of a pain to navigate, but it was very long, so we could line up all our appliances from end to end - no need to cart them in and out of storage. Our current kitchen is so small, we actually had to set up the panini press and some other appliances in the living room 🙄.
But you're right, there are always ways to make the kitchen "friendlier" without having to do a full reno. Lazy Susans help, as do basket organizers. In lieu of a proper pantry area, we keep our staples on trolleys that we roll into the kitchen when we need them.

Thank you so much, Rebecca!! Substack does feel like a breath of fresh air after being in the blogging world, doesn’t it. Big hugs to you!
so love the work Nicki does in her podcast & recipes!
This means so much, Sarah!! ❤️

Love! Love your new kitchen!!! Looks beautiful and functional!
Thank you, Nina!! It's my happy place. 😊
What a wonderful kitchen and philosophy! I love the idea of the mini tablespoon measuring cup.
It's so functional (and cute)!
