Ingredients and Substitutions
This is just an overview of the ingredients I used for making this recipe, with possible alternatives and why I may have used them. A full list can be found in the instructions below.
Puff Pastry - A ready-rolled puff pastry sheet makes the job easier. Block puff pastry is fine. Roll it out as thin as possible. About the thickness of a £1 coin (3-4 mm)
Sugar - Soft brown sugar gives a really nice toffee flavour. White caster sugar is fine, but the flavour and colour of the end result will be different.
Butter - Unsalted.
Cinnamon - The quantity used in this recipe, when mixed with the soft brown sugar, will leave plenty left over for another time. You can also use your favourite spice. Speculaas is a nice alternative.
Instructions for making Easy Cinnamon Swirls.
This Cinnamon Swirls recipe is quick and easy to make, especially when you are using ready-rolled puff pastry. Make sure the puff pastry is thoroughly defrosted before you begin.
Equipment
1 Baking tray
Baking parchment
Ingredients
1 Sheet of ready rolled puff pastry
50 g unsalted butter
50 g soft brown sugar
10 g (2 tablespoons) ground cinnamon
Icing sugar for dusting optional
Preheat the oven to 180 deg (Fan assisted oven). Have ready a large baking tray covered with a sheet of baking parchment.
Step 1: Roll out the puff pastry on the baking parchment it came in. Melt the butter and spread it thickly over the puff pastry before it begins to set. Tip: Leave a little of the melted butter to one side to brush the tops of the Cinnamon Swirls before baking.
Step 2: Mix together the soft brown sugar and the cinnamon. Then, evenly scatter at least half the spice mixture over the melted butter on the sheet of puff pastry. Tip: Save and store the rest in a small, tight container to use in other bakes.
Step 3: Carefully press the cinnamon mixture into the butter layer. This is made easier and less messy using a sheet of kitchen paper and a rolling pin.
Step 4: Cut about 1 cm strips lengthways using a pizza cutter. Tip: If you want smaller, party-sized cinnamon swirl bites, cut along the short edge of the pastry and proceed with the rest of the recipe. Remember to reduce the baking time.
Step 5: Carefully and firmly twist each cinnamon and puff pastry trips. Then, begin to curl each one around itself into a swirl.
Step 6: Tuck the ends of the pastry underneath to help keep the swirls in an even round shape.
Step 7: Brush the tops of the remaining melted butter. Note: By this time, you may need to remelt the butter gently.
Step 8: Place the Cinnamon Swirls onto the prepared baking tray already covered with a sheet of baking parchment. Bake in the oven for 12 - 15 minutes or until baked with a nice golden colour. The pastry should be soft in the middle and crispy on the outside.
Note: Smaller bite-sized swirls will need less baking time.
Serve while still warm, dusted with a little icing sugar, or gently reheat in a moderate oven for a couple of minutes if serving for breakfast the next day.
Storage
Store in an airtight container for up to a couple of days. I am not sure if they will freeze. Let me know in the comments below if this is something you have tried,
